In 1996 Ascension was one of the first wineries in New Zealand (and the first in Matakana) to plant
the then little known Viognier grape, one of the world’s most exotic varieties. It is so difficult to grow
it almost vanished from the face of the earth. But with perseverance and experience; Ascension has
mastered the art of coaxing Viognier grapes that are as heavenly as the vestal priestesses of Ancient
Rome. Off-dry, luscious and full-bodied with a long, opulent finish – this wine has flavours
& aromas of apricot, orange blossom, musk and clove.
